Hike into the Dragon Glass Katla Ice Cave

The ice cave is located in the glacier outlet of the Myrdalsjokull glacier, named Kötlujökull Glacier. Once we arrive at the Ice Cave, our guide will provide you with all the equipment needed during the glacier hike: crampons, a harness, an ice ax, and a helmet. After our guide included a safety briefing and information about the glaciers and ice caves, we are ready to explore the Ice Cave from the inside! Be amazed by the spectacular experience of being inside the Ice Cave, seeing multiple deep blue colors in combination with the volcanic ashes. The ice formations and the light that falls into the Ice cave provide us with an experience you will not soon forget!

Enjoy a snack or a drink before our Jeep brings us back to the meeting point in Vik. The Dragon Glass Katla Ice Cave adventure has come to an end!

    The complete excursion lasts 3 hours, of which we spend 1 to 1 and a half hours in the cave itself.
  • How many people are in the group?

    This is a small group activity, so there is a maximum of 12 passengers per guide.
  • How difficult is it to climb the Dragon Glass Katla Ice cave glacier?

    Our glacier tour is considered to be easy to moderate for anyone in good physical condition. If you are able to walk for about 1 hour up and 1 hour down on uneven surfaces, there would not be any problem. Also, let us remind you that you will hike with safety equipment and a professional and certified glacier guide who will help you at any time.   • What should I wear during the glacier hike?

    During winter (August till April) we recommend you to wear: warm clothing as the first layer, waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with ankle protection, and a hat and gloves. During summer (April till August) we recommend you to wear: waterproof outdoor jacket and pants. Make sure you do not wear jeans for glacier hike activities. Once it gets wet, it will take a long time to dry and therefore it will leave you cold.
  • Can my tour be canceled due to weather conditions?

    Wind, rain, and snow are characteristic of Iceland, so the tour will not be canceled due to this. In case of extreme weather conditions that prevent the tour from taking place, an alternative date or a full refund will be offered.
  • Do I have to bring food and drinks?

    Yes, we would definitely recommend you to bring some snacks and drinks. However, there is no need to bring too much since this is only a 3-hour glacier hike activity.
