Sólheimajökull is a glacier outlet of Mýrdalsjökull, one of the largest glaciers in Europe.

You will also be able to look out onto a glacier moulin where your guide will prepare a climbing rope and you will learn how to ascend a vertical wall using ice axes and crampons.

Glacier Hike and Ice Climbing Sólheimajökull
Meeting at Sólheimajökull
We will meet our guide and the rest of the group at the Sólheimajökull parking lot. In the booking confirmation, you will find all the information about the exact meeting point to make it easy for you to find it. The guide will give us all the necessary equipment for the activity, hiking boots, helmet, ice axes, headlamp and crampons. We will equip ourselves with all the material except the crampons, which we will put on later. Are we ready?

Glacier hike
We will start our trek entering the glacier and once we have been walking for about 15 minutes, the guide will explain how to put on the crampons and the safety rules that we have to take into account during this tour. With the crampons on our feet we will go in search of a place to climb the ice. Since the glacier changes, we will not always climb in the same place. The guide will look for a good crevasse for us to climb and that is not traversed by other travelers who are visiting the glacier. The guide will prepare everything, he will nail a screw where he will tie the safety rope so that we can climb and rappel down.

Glacier hike
Once the climb is finished, we will walk along the glacier to see all the crevasses, caves, fissures and wells that have formed in the ice. After seeing all the nooks and crannies that the glacier has to offer, we will return to the meeting point where we will end this glacier adventure.
